Writing without rules

Some people believe you can write well without knowing the rules. I strongly agree.

When an individual is given guidelines to writing a specific piece, I believe that sometimes it’s hard to simply focus. People focus more on the rules of writing than the actual point of writing. A good way to start off writing is to just write freely. Writing freely means writing what ever comes to mind. For example if the subject is “life”, you can begin to write down all the words and phrases that come to mind when thinking of the word “life”. Doing this can help you form sentences. After forming sentences that’s how stores are told. In writing, every piece must tell a story. Someone who is more focused on rules will not tell a precise story. But a person whose main focus is to tell a story will demonstrate creative expression. Some people think knowing all the rules of writing makes you a good writer. I strongly disagree. A writer is someone who can take their reader on a magical adventure, an adventure that will leave the reader wanting more. It’s always good to have appropriate grammar when it’s necessary, but knowing and using “big” words aren’t always required. There are simple words that either mean the same as “big” words or are similar and just as appropriate.

Writing for the Media and my life

I am currently a junior at Manhattanville College majoring in Communications with a minor in Political Science. When I was growing my dream was to follow in my father’s foot steps and become a broadcast journalist. All I did was eat, sleep, and dream of broadcasting the news. In 2006 when I entered Manhattanville College, my passion for broadcasting disappeared. I met my advisor Mary Corriano who was a lawyer from New York City. She inspired me to pursue law. During my freshmen year my most important ambition was to join the pre-law society club and network my way into the field of law. I am currently a junior and the update of my career is, the media, which is my passion. I have decided to give back by becoming a publicist. This course is perfect me, because I have a strong liking for most mediums and I would like to expand my knowledge on other types of medias that I use less. The thought of learning how to write for multiple media sources is really interesting. This is my first time writing a blog. I usually have a lot to say about many different topics and I think this is a creative way of expressing my inner thoughts. I hope to gain a lot out of this course, because I strongly believe this course will be helpful for my career path.
