Random Thoughts

Is age really just a number?

I truly believe that age is really just a number. Why should a numeric symbol define who a person really is? There are 60 year old people that feel as young as 10 year old children. Those people are capable of doing just as much as children can do. There are teenagers that are mature way beyond their years.

What is my biggest fear?

My biggest fear is honestly death! I am so afraid of not being on earth with my family and friends anymore. I can’t even imagine how it feels to not breathe anymore, or being in a coffin six feet underground, just the thought alone if scary. The scariest thought ever is the way I would die. I don’t want to die in a fire, car crash, or by a gun. I would rather just die in my sleep if anything. I wish people could choose the way they died. Even if we couldn’t choose the age, choosing the way we die would give me relief of the death experience.

College Life…

It’s great! Being out of mom and dads house is the best feeling ever! Even though I miss them dearly, I love have all of this freedom and privacy. I’m originally from Providence, R.I. I only came to NY for school, however, I have decided to live here after I graduate! Everything about living in NY excites me. My favorite experience about NY is walking around the city. The city is so pretty at night and for some reason is really pleasant ans soothing.

Craigslist Murder

What does Sancious think about the woman that was murdered from craigslist?
Well, here goes…

First off I want to start off by saying people need to be aware of the dangers of meeting people from online. If you consider yourself to be an adult, you have to make cautious decisions. The internet is a very dangerous thing to be played with. People have to be careful what kind of personal information they share on the websites. Identity is all we have in this world. Once that is stolen from us, there’s nothing left but sorrow and worries.

The woman that was murdered didn’t deserve to die, but she set her own self up. She should not have been exchanging personal information with a stranger she has never met from online. People lie about who they really are all the time, without any shame or guilt. Its make sick when I hear of a murder due to internet dating. People hear about kidnappings, people being raped and murdered all the time, and still they continue to live curiously.

People have to educate themselves on the dangers of the world. Tune into the news channels and become aware of the world that you live in! Stop becoming another statistic of a homicide in America. No one asks to be killed, but I believe some people place themselves in awkward scary situations. The sad part is, this woman’s death probably won’t even be a warning for some other women. I’m pretty sure people will continue to live life through the internet.

Sex in advertising....

Advertising is a major component in the American society. People see an estimate of 3,000 ads per day. Advertising and the power it has is what causes the manipulation in shaping human behavior. In order for a person to either pay attention to an ad or remember it, they must be able to relate to the ad in some way. Ads must produce some type of an attention-getter for the human eye. One of the leading attention-getters in advertisements is sexual content. Sex influenced ads can be found mostly in the print and television medium. Sexual content might make some viewers uncomfortable, excited, or motivated. If a person has a reaction to sexual content in an ad, this means that the ad has had an affect on this individual. This can either be positive or negative for the product being advertised. In today’s society most non-children ads don’t receive attention unless sex is its main influencer.
The use of sexual content can be used to sell just about any product. Sexual content in some ads are easier to discover then others. These ads usually include some type of subliminal message that spells sex. Many people assume that only perfume and cologne ads have sexual content. However, products such as jewelry, cosmetics, shampoo have women demonstrating seductive behavior while in contact with the product. For example, if a man sees a woman in an ad seductively holding a male Rolex watch, this could encourage him to purchase the watch. If a woman sees another woman in an ad with a man in a perfume/cologne ad and they are sexually interacting, she might think that the product in the ad will have the same affect for the woman and her personal life. Sexual advertising can lead people into a fantasy world, which can either affect them in a positive or negative way. People are easily influenced by what they see in ads. People need to see other people interacting with one another in ads in order to react to the product. Studies indicate that the American society live their life according to advertisements. Without ads people would be unaware of what is available to them.

My favorite Poem of all time! I have to share this with all of my readers! please pass this poem on....

Pretty women wonder where my secret liesI'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's sizeBut when I start to tell them They think I'm telling lies. I say, It's in the reach of my arms The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.
I walk into a room Just as cool as you please, And to a man, The fellows stand or Fall down on their knees. Then they swarm around me, A hive of honey bees. I say, It's the fire in my eyes And the flash of my teeth, The swing of my waist, And the joy in my feet. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.
Men themselves have wondered What they see in me. They try so much But they can't touch My inner mystery. When I try to show them, They say they still can't see. I say It's in the arch of my back, The sun of my smile, The ride of my breasts, The grace of my style. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.
Now you understand Just why my head's not bowed. I don't shout or jump about Or have to talk real loud. When you see me passing It ought to make you proud. I say, It's in the click of my heels, The bend of my hair, The palm of my hand, The need of my care, 'Cause I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.

Bravo’s Housewives of NYC is a very entertaining reality show. The women on the show are: Alex McCord, Bethenny Frankel, Jill Zarin, Kelly Bensimon, LuAnn de Lesseps, and Ramona Singer.

These women are all wealthy. Alex is a mother of two boys and she actually has a job as a graphic designer, her husband is Simon van Kempen. Bethenny is a single health food chef for celebrities. Jill is a spoiled brat that is married to a wealthy man named bobby, and they own Zarin fabrics in the city. Kelly is an ex-model, a single mother of two girls. LuAnn and a countess with two children and she is married to Count de Lesseps. And finally Ramona, she is a daughter, she is very independent and thinks everyone should be. She owns her own business and is wealthy.

Alex and Simon are the weirdo liars in the group. They want so bad to fit in with Manhattan’s Elite. They ever fail to contradict themselves. Bethenny is a lonely chef who wants to find a love match more than just enjoying life. Jill is a brat! She whines in Bobby’s ear all day about wanting new and expensive presents. For example, for her birthday she received a $20,000 handbag and a 100,000 Mercedes Benz. Kelly is the B**** of the group. She’s always starting drama and seems to be a big time liar! She’s actually in recent news for physically abusing an ex-boyfriend! LuAnn is another brat! She constantly talks about being a countess and gets angry when people don’t refer to her as a countess. LuAnn, like Kelly is in recent news also. Her husband cheated on her and left her for a Ethiopian princess. Ramona has great morals and values; however she is a complete weirdo and has an obnoxious behavior.

This is just a simple summary of the characters on this reality show. If you would like a good laugh please tune into The Real Housewives of NYC every Tuesday at 10pm.

End of semester advice

It is the last week of classes and most students are more stress than ever at this point. Students, please remain calm. The best things to do are: organize your final assignments on a calendar, organize and put in order due dates and revisions on final work, and last but not least enjoy your friends before you depart for the summer.

The last week of school should be stress free and enjoyable. This is the start of summer vacation and fun, fun, and more fun. There’s absolutely no need to be depressed or worried. If you are feeling any of these to emotions, then you will need to start a new way of doing things for the next semester. This means that you are disorganized and unprepared for your education. Also remember you’re not alone in this process. There are students around you with just as much work, or probably even more. If you need help, there is the Academic Resource Center (ARC), located on the ground floor of the library. The help they provide is unlimited.

Manhattanville has a beautiful and spacious quad that you can take advantage of at anytime during the nice weather days. I encourage you to use the quad to relax and clear your mind, get some work done, and just enjoy the company of your peers.

Last but the least before you leave for your summer vacation make sure everything for the next semester of school is taken care of. These things include financial aide, student accounts, room and board, and any other expenses or issues that could prevent you from having a good start to a stress free semester.

Life after college: Senior Basketball star Wes Wicks

When was the first time you ever played basketball and how were you introduced to it?

(W) I was 7 or 8 when I started. I started off just watching basketball games on TV. My father and brother played and it inspired me.

Do you plan on playing in any leagues after college, if so which ones or would you prefer to go into your career of choice?

(W) As of right now I have a few opportunities to play in exposure camps to showcase my talents, so I can later play overseas.

It don’t matter what team I play for, I just want to play.
If I don’t play overseas, I will work for my old high school as an assist coach. I haven’t ever thought of just giving up on basketball.

Do you feel it’s difficult for athletes to pursue their majors after college because of the sport they play? If so why?

(W) I wouldn’t say it’s difficult, but as an athlete, you don’t really want to work after college you would rather play the sport that is your passion. Working is like an alternative for not being able or accepted in the professional leagues. I think people only work after college, because either they lose the passion for the sport or the sport loses the passion in them.

Do you think Manhattanville Athletics have prepared for your next step in your career sports career?

(W) Yes, I think it has prepared me both physically and mentally.

The what if blog......

What if you could go back in time, where would you go and why?

If I could go back in time, I would go back in the 60’s. Reading about civil rights activist always made me feel excited and proud to be an African American individual. If I could go back in time I would want to be around when Martin Luther King Jr. I would have loved to work side by side with him. There were so many African American people that gave up their lives fighting for the rights of others. I would have marched over 100 miles to make a difference. While marching I would be shouting for equal right. The only thing that would scare me about going back in time is the personality that I currently have. My personality is very strong and dominant. Things back then were segregated between black /and white people, which is something I would not have been able to tolerate. I can actually picture myself doing things as daring as using a “white’s only” restroom or drink fountain, or even sitting in the “white’s” section in a diner.

If I lived in that generation I would feel scared knowing of the consequences that black people faced when trying to stand up for their rights. However, being the strong black woman that I am I would be willing to risk my life on behave of equality. When I am passionate about something especially culture, I will do what ever it takes to make a point.

What if you were left on a deserted island with only one thing, what would it be and why?

First off, if I were left on an island all alone, I hope the island would be surrounded by beautiful clear blue water. Before I panic I would take a good swim to calm my mind. If I could bring one thing to the island it would of course be a phone!!! If I’m going to be alone I will still need to talk to people and let them know my everyday updates.

What if you could be one famous person, who would it be and why?

I would be Barack Obama during his presidential election. I would have loved to go on the journey he went through to get to the white house. Hard work pays off and he is the result of that. On the day of his inauguration he must a felt a feeling that the average American will probably never feel. That is the same feeling I want to feel, that’s why I would want to be Obama.

The Wall Street Journal Book

"Men in brown"

“Men in brown” was about UPS workers and the obsession women have for them. A UPS worker symbolizes a strong sexy man that looks like some form of a hero. They usually have what women call the ultimate body and looks. The men look great in the uniforms and have a powerful demeanor about them. I think women find a sense of security in these men. For example, they know the same worker will be there everyday, so therefore they look forward to it. Unlike other men that aren’t UPS workers, women aren’t sure of security within them.

Women fantasize about the men in brown. Its like that uniform stands for sex appeal. It’s just something about a man in a uniform period that turns a woman on. Some women are so obsessed, that if the their usual UPS man had a day off; they would call the company and ask why he wasn’t present that day. Some women let live in a fantasy world which allows them to believe these men are what every man should be. If the men in their lives don’t meet these standards, then that’s when there is lack of respect.

In my opinion, UPS men usually have great appearances, but that’s all it is. I can never imagine myself fantasizing about any of them. My first initial thought would be about his personality. Asking myself questions such as: what’s his personality like? Is he married? Any kids? What’s the furthest he got in school? Everything’s definitely not always about looks in this society. Some of the best looking people in this society can be the cruelest of all. But overall, it doesn’t hurt to just look and wonder about the men in brown!

Chris and Rihanna

The Grammy's is an event that almost every American looks forward to every year. Everyone wants to know who's wearing what? Who brought a date? And who are the nights' most important performers. This year I was looking forward to performances from Chris Brown and his alleged girlfriend Rihanna. They both make great music. Many people look forward to performances by Chris Brown because of his dancing style. He always finds creative ways to deliver his musical expressions. Instead of the two R&B singers performing at the Grammy’s the two were in a domestic violence dispute. The LAPD reported that Rihanna said Chris Brown punched her in the face, bit her, and chocked her unconscious. There are a lot of celebrities reaching out for Rihanna and telling media sources that Chris Brown is basically a horrible person. At this time Chris has lost a lot of fans, endorsements, and air time on popular radio stations. I honestly think that this situation is being blown out of proportion. Rihanna’s own father and other family members spoke out and said that her injuries were not as serious as the media were making them out to be.

The only two people that actually know what happened that night is Chris Rihanna. No one knows how the fight got started and why it did. This situation is a big “he say, she say”. For all we know Rihanna and Chris both could have been drunk or even on drugs that night. The two were leaving Clyde Davis’s pre- Grammy party where other celebrities were also partying. Rihanna claimed that she doesn’t remember anything prior to him chocking her. So the question is, how does she know he was the one that attacked her, when he wasn’t even found on the scene.I just feel that the media are making Chris out to be a horrible person. They have been bringing things up from his child hood, such as times where he witnessed his mom being abused. This is very unnecessary and inappropriate.

I just feel that there is something that is missing in this whole story. There is something that people don’t know about this couple that either media sources don’t have information on, or are just not releasing yet. I don’t even think this story should be getting as much cover as it’s getting. There are way more hectic things going on in the world then Chris Brown and Rihanna. The topic is definitely overrated now!!!

Writing without rules

Some people believe you can write well without knowing the rules. I strongly agree.

When an individual is given guidelines to writing a specific piece, I believe that sometimes it’s hard to simply focus. People focus more on the rules of writing than the actual point of writing. A good way to start off writing is to just write freely. Writing freely means writing what ever comes to mind. For example if the subject is “life”, you can begin to write down all the words and phrases that come to mind when thinking of the word “life”. Doing this can help you form sentences. After forming sentences that’s how stores are told. In writing, every piece must tell a story. Someone who is more focused on rules will not tell a precise story. But a person whose main focus is to tell a story will demonstrate creative expression. Some people think knowing all the rules of writing makes you a good writer. I strongly disagree. A writer is someone who can take their reader on a magical adventure, an adventure that will leave the reader wanting more. It’s always good to have appropriate grammar when it’s necessary, but knowing and using “big” words aren’t always required. There are simple words that either mean the same as “big” words or are similar and just as appropriate.

Writing for the Media and my life

I am currently a junior at Manhattanville College majoring in Communications with a minor in Political Science. When I was growing my dream was to follow in my father’s foot steps and become a broadcast journalist. All I did was eat, sleep, and dream of broadcasting the news. In 2006 when I entered Manhattanville College, my passion for broadcasting disappeared. I met my advisor Mary Corriano who was a lawyer from New York City. She inspired me to pursue law. During my freshmen year my most important ambition was to join the pre-law society club and network my way into the field of law. I am currently a junior and the update of my career is, the media, which is my passion. I have decided to give back by becoming a publicist. This course is perfect me, because I have a strong liking for most mediums and I would like to expand my knowledge on other types of medias that I use less. The thought of learning how to write for multiple media sources is really interesting. This is my first time writing a blog. I usually have a lot to say about many different topics and I think this is a creative way of expressing my inner thoughts. I hope to gain a lot out of this course, because I strongly believe this course will be helpful for my career path.
