Sex in advertising....

Advertising is a major component in the American society. People see an estimate of 3,000 ads per day. Advertising and the power it has is what causes the manipulation in shaping human behavior. In order for a person to either pay attention to an ad or remember it, they must be able to relate to the ad in some way. Ads must produce some type of an attention-getter for the human eye. One of the leading attention-getters in advertisements is sexual content. Sex influenced ads can be found mostly in the print and television medium. Sexual content might make some viewers uncomfortable, excited, or motivated. If a person has a reaction to sexual content in an ad, this means that the ad has had an affect on this individual. This can either be positive or negative for the product being advertised. In today’s society most non-children ads don’t receive attention unless sex is its main influencer.
The use of sexual content can be used to sell just about any product. Sexual content in some ads are easier to discover then others. These ads usually include some type of subliminal message that spells sex. Many people assume that only perfume and cologne ads have sexual content. However, products such as jewelry, cosmetics, shampoo have women demonstrating seductive behavior while in contact with the product. For example, if a man sees a woman in an ad seductively holding a male Rolex watch, this could encourage him to purchase the watch. If a woman sees another woman in an ad with a man in a perfume/cologne ad and they are sexually interacting, she might think that the product in the ad will have the same affect for the woman and her personal life. Sexual advertising can lead people into a fantasy world, which can either affect them in a positive or negative way. People are easily influenced by what they see in ads. People need to see other people interacting with one another in ads in order to react to the product. Studies indicate that the American society live their life according to advertisements. Without ads people would be unaware of what is available to them.
